"When a child grieves a loss - whether because of a death or parents divorcing - they have questions.  Adults struggle to find the right words to help them understand.

Dr. Draper models how to do this in a way that is appropriate for a child. She will "put words in your mouth" and you'll understand her audio is a wise investment.  Not only will it be useful for you, you'll want to recommend it to others."

Charlotte Lankard, Marriage and Family Therapist, Director of the Center for Mind, Body and Spirit at INTEGRIS Health, weekly columnist for The Oklahoman, author of It's Called Life and founder of CALM WATERS - Oklahoma City's non-profit organization working with children, ages 4 to 18, whose lives have been changed by death or divorce.

Talking with children about death or divorce is so hard.

Do you get nervous just thinking about

having these kinds of conversations with your kids?

I was.

Several years before I was divorced, my stepfather, Fred, became ill with cancer. He was diagnosed and only lived for three months. Fred was a wonderful man.

My children were so young - only 1 and 3 years old. How did I explain to them at such

a young age about their grandfather and that he was dying?

I was sent Dr. Wanda Draper's audio by a friend, and I couldn't believe how helpful it was.

I learned a lot about what to say, what tone of voice to use and the exact words to use- both uniquely demonstrated by Dr. Draper, child psychiatrist, former professor of child development, and author.  With her help, I was able to talk with my 3 year old daughter effectively, so that she was able to understand and talk about her grandfather's death.

Did you know that you have to be very careful

about the examples you use to describe "death" to children?

I had no idea before I listed to this tape why what you say and how you say it becomes crucial in talking with children.

If you talk about how it is "like going to sleep", you might end up with a child that thinks they will die, if they go to sleep. What you say.. and just as important, how you say it, can impact how a child thinks about death for the rest of their lives.  So, it is important to say it the right way.

A few years later,

I realized that I would again need Dr. Draper's words,

when my husband and I were divorcing.

What should I say and not say to them?  What should I expect from my children when I tell them? What makes the difference between children who cope with the information while some children act out? Is is their age or something else or both?

Once more, her suggestions and demonstration of exactly what to say and how to talk about our divorce with my children made the difference in my feelings of confidence and relief in what and how I was going to tell them about this news.

I was thrilled to learn that Dr. Draper is allowing The Bridge Across

(and only us) to sell her audios (and include the transcripts) for the parents and other family members that really needed this kind of guidance and help.

Dr. Wanda Draper has spent years working with children in multiple fields and understands what kids of all ages need to know and what parents and grandparents need to say about those difficult moments...
